Democratic hopes for reaching a bipartisan agreement on gun control have begun to wane after positive signs in recent days, as lawmakers were unable to reach agreement on a legislative text on Thursday.
Senator John Cornyn of Texas, lead by Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut, will ensure that negotiations with Democrats for a gun control legislation are overseen by Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.
After a school shooting left 19 children and two adults dead in Uvalde, Texas, senators made a concerted effort to reach a package of legislation that would pass the 60-vote filibuster threshold.
During a press conference on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, Cornyn told reporters that he is becoming increasingly concerned as the group works to iron out details, including how to fund states with red flag laws.
“This is the hardest part because at some point you just [have] to make a decision and when people don’t want to make a decision, you can’t accomplish a result. And that’s kind of where we are right now,” Cornyn told reporters.
