Authorities said the suspect surrendered to police after fatally shooting a hotel clerk and barricading himself in a hotel room.
In Dearborn, the gunman surrendered shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday, approximately seven hours after the standoff started. There had been evacuations or lockdowns in the surrounding popular dining and shopping areas.
Issa Shahin, Dearborn police chief, said the man was "armed with a rifle, threatened officers many times, and the situation was tenuous." Fortunately, the situation was resolved peacefully.
Shahin said the shooting was caused by a dispute over money. According to Shahin, the victim, identified as a 55-year-old American from Riverview, died in the hospital.
Hotel guests and businesses in the area were evacuated by police. Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw reported that downtown traffic was halted.
