Biometric Identity Firm Expands Research Partnership with DHS and TSA

A U.S.-based biometric technology company has announced an expansion of its research collaboration with federal agencies aimed at exploring next-generation identity verification systems. According to Global e·dentity™ Inc., the company has amended its Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

The amendment introduces a new phase focused on handling Personally Identifiable Information (PII), with an emphasis on developing and evaluating privacy-conscious biometric digital identity solutions. The collaboration builds on more than a year of joint work between the company and multiple DHS and TSA units, including the Transportation Security Laboratory.

According to Global e·dentity™, the updated agreement reflects ongoing efforts to explore biometric systems that prioritize both security and privacy. The company’s approach centers on storing sensitive biometric data locally on user devices rather than in centralized databases, aiming to reduce risks associated with data exposure.

The company says the technology under evaluation includes multi-factor biometric authentication, cryptographic verification of identity documents, and mobile-based identity enrollment systems.

Experts note that such systems are part of a broader industry trend toward “self-sovereign identity,” where individuals maintain greater control over their personal data.

According to Global e·dentity™, discussions around the limitations of traditional facial recognition technologies remain ongoing. The company references publicly available evaluations indicating that performance can vary across demographic groups and that emerging threats such as deepfakes present new challenges for identity verification systems.

In response, the company says it is developing alternative biometric methods designed to improve accuracy and resilience while maintaining compliance with privacy standards.

The collaboration is currently focused on research, testing, and evaluation. Any potential deployment would be subject to further review, regulatory approval, and policy decisions.

According to Global e·dentity™, the technology could have applications beyond aviation security, including banking, healthcare, and border management. The company also indicated that international partnerships are under consideration.

The company further notes it is evaluating long-term growth strategies, including possible commercialization initiatives in the coming years.
