Flagstaff is an oasis from the heat of the desert, surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, meadows, and ponderosa pines.
The wind-driven fires have started raging again, fueled by winds that grounded aircraft Monday. The blaze has spared largely homes, but it has made its way into wilderness areas and toward a volcanic lava dome. Crews anticipated more moderate winds Tuesday and throughout the week, which could help them contain the fire.
The two wildfires that are burning on the outskirts of Flagstaff have forced residents to evacuate 2,500 homes. Coconino County Sheriff's Office reports that one home and another structure have burned. Many other people have been forced from their homes as well by wildfires in California and New Mexico.
While smoke billowed and winds howled in the air, residents scanned the mountains, some scared, some nervous - but most hoped moisture due later this week would provide some relief.
