Russia is reporting that it fired long-range missiles at a depot in the western Lviv region of Ukraine that housed NATO-supplied ammunition, and the governor of one of the key eastern cities acknowledged that Russian forces are in the lead in heavy fighting.
"Heavy fighting continues in Sievierodonetsk as well today," said Serhiy Haidai, the Ukrainian governor of Luhansk. Luhansk and Donetsk make up the Donbas.
A day earlier, Russian government officials had announced a humanitarian corridor from the Azot plant, but said it would take civilians to areas controlled by the Russian army, not Ukrainian forces.
Ukraine's forces have been accused by separatists backed by Russia of sabotaging an evacuation of civilians from the besieged Azot chemical plant, where about 500 civilians and an unknown number of Ukrainian fighters are believed to have taken cover from missile strikes. This claim was not verifiable.
