The Italian envoy to the Congo was killed in an attack on a UN convoy
Italy and the United Nations said that Italy's ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, his bodyguard, and a World Food Program driver was killed on Monday when their convoy was attacked in the east of the country.
The convoy came under attack around 10:15 AM. A spokesman for Virunga National Park told Reuters (0815 GMT) in a kidnapping attempt near the city of Kanyamahoro, about 25 km north of the regional capital, Goma.
In a statement, the Italian government confirmed the killing of Ambassador Luca Atanasio, 43, the Italian military policeman, Vittorio Iacovaci, 30, and the Congolese driver, whose name was not revealed.
