Small businesses and the middle class face higher IRS audits

According to a new survey, many Americans expect the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to target low- and middle-income households and small businesses.

According to a recent poll conducted by Convention of States Action and Trafalgar Group, 36.2 percent of respondents believe that the IRS will audit low- and middle-income earners, as well as small businesses, with the 87,000 new agents.

Fewer than one-third of Americans (32 percent) say the government will audit wealthy Americans or large corporations. Nearly 16 percent believe the IRS will hire thousands of new employees to target political opponents.

Since the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 was approved, President Joe Biden and his administration have repeatedly promised that the $80 billion in additional IRS funding will not be employed to home in on anyone earning less than $400,000. Democrats also purport that the money will be used to improve taxpayer services.

Approximately 45 percent of respondents to a Morning Consult-Politico survey are concerned about the IRS stepping up audit activity. According to the study, 24 percent of people are worried about being audited by the IRS, and 22 percent expect the tax agency to heavily target middle-income earners.
