Mitch McConnell drops objection to Senate power-sharing deal with Democrats

Mitch McConnel Senate Republican leader, said on Monday that he would accept a US Senate power-sharing deal with Democrats, abandoning demands that have delayed basic organization and day-to-day work of the Senate by 50-50 days.

Democrat Senator Schumer refused to guarantee the filibuster would continue. But in a statement, McConnell cited comments from moderate Democratic Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, who said they would not support the removal of the filibuster.

“The legislative filibuster was a key part of the foundation beneath the Senate’s last 50-50 power-sharing agreement in 2001,” Mitch McConnell said. “With these assurances, I look forward to moving ahead with a power-sharing agreement modeled on that precedent.”

Senate committees have still not been reorganized under Democratic control.
