GOP and Dems Senators reach agreement to reallocate $10 billion in COVID-19 funds

Senator Chuck Schumer, the majority leader of the Senate, announced on April 4 that the Senate reached a deal on $10 billion in additional funding for the United States' COVID-19 response.

By repurposing unspent COVID-19 funds primarily from Democrats' American Rescue Plan, this funding will provide urgent COVID-19 needs and therapeutics.

$9.2 billion will go to the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority from the $10 billion allocated to the Department of Health and Human Services.

The $22.5 billion is less than half the amount proposed by Joe Biden, and does not include funding to support the administration's efforts to counter the virus around the world.

“This $10 billion COVID package will give the federal government—and our citizens—the tools we need to continue our economic recovery, keep schools open and keep American families safe,” Schumer said.
