A statement released Wednesday confirmed that Madeleine Albright passed away at 84 years old. Albright was part of the Clinton administration for over a decade.

When she served as secretary of state under then-President Clinton from 1997 to 2001, Albright expanded NATO eastward into former Soviet states and led the NATO campaign to stop ethnic cleansing in Kosovo in 1999. She was also the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations between 1993 and 1997.

“We are heartbroken to announce that Dr. Madeleine K. Albright, the 64th U.S. Secretary of State … passed away earlier today,” her family said. “The cause was cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends.”
