Democrat Jim Clyburn says Trump may have to testify Jan. 6 House Panel
Democrat Jim Clyburn said former President Trump may have to testify before a select committee to investigate the Jan. 6 incident.
The House voted last week to form a select committee to investigate the Jan. 6 Capitol breach. All Democrats voted to create the commission, while only two Republicans joined.
“Oh, if it comes to that, they should go wherever the facts lead. They may be able to get what they want and need without him testifying,” Jim Clyburn during a CNN interview.
“I would not want to see a former president testifying in such a situation as this. But if that’s what it takes in order to get to the bottom of this, because this is more than anyone person. This is this country,” Clyburn added.
House Speaker Pelosi last week named several lawmakers to the committee, including House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, House Administration Committee Chairwoman Zoe Lofgren, Rep. Pete Aguilar, Rep. Jamie Raskin, Rep. Elaine Luria, Rep. Stephanie Murphy, and Rep. Liz Cheney.
Cheney accepted the offer to serve on the panel, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy suggested that she could lose her duties on the committee.
Cheney and Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) were the two Republicans to vote in favor of the panel. Both are frequent critics of former President Donald Trump.
“I’m not threatening anybody with committee assignments,” Kevin McCarthy said during the conference. “It was shocking to me that if a person is Republican, they get their committee assignments from the Republican conference. For somebody to accept committee assignments from Speaker Pelosi—that’s unprecedented.”
The former president Donald Trump, during a rally in Florida, has repeatedly said that the congressional Democratic-led investigations and impeachment efforts were part of a partisan “witch hunt.”
