COVID-19 tested positive for Steny Hoyer

The Maryland Democratic representative Steny Hoyer was diagnosed with COVID-19 on Tuesday.

According to a statement released by the 82-year-old congressman, I tested positive for COVID-19 this afternoon and have experienced mild symptoms. I have already received my booster shot and have been fully vaccinated."

“I would like to thank the researchers, scientists, and medical experts who put tremendous effort into developing the COVID-19 vaccines as well as all the public health workers and volunteers in our communities who fought tirelessly for vaccinations in our communities.”

Congressman Hoyer is going to spend the upcoming week working from home during his isolation period. He will also be using proxy voting to "protect the safety" of fellow members of Congress. During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, proxy voting was approved by lawmakers who could authorize another legislator to vote for them.

House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) tested positive for COVID-19 in December 2021. Hoyer is the second House Democrat speaker to test positive recently.
