Karine Jean-Pierre was named the next White House press secretary by President Joe Biden on Thursday, becoming the first Black woman and openly gay person to serve in that position. Incumbent Jen Psaki leaves the position next week.
Jean-Pierre assumes the role within the current White House administration that faces an uphill battle in this fall’s midterm elections to keep Democrats in the House and Senate, as well as a soaring inflation rate and sluggish economy that continue to worry Americans.
She also comes into the job as Biden faces a daunting array of foreign policy challenges, including the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and North Korea’s escalating nuclear testing program. Biden is set to visit South Korea and Japan later this month and Europe in June.
