Voter registration delay questions by Virginia lawmaker

State lawmakers are questioning why Virginia's Department of Elections has not been more forthcoming about what's causing delays in processing about 100,000 voter registrations.

In a letter sent Oct. 6 to Elections Commissioner Susan Beals, Sen. Lionell Spruill, a Democrat who represents District 5 and oversees state elections, requested an explanation.

A statement released by Beals blamed the problem on "intermittent network issues," noting that about 107,000 voter registrations were sent to local registrars "to ensure voters are properly registered."

“In the future, when difficulties like these arise, the chairpersons of the Senate and House privileges and elections committees should receive notification so that we are fully informed as part of our responsibility to oversee the operations of your department,” he wrote.
