U.S. Court of Appeals rejects efforts to prevent a late ballot in Pennsylvania.
On Friday, a federal appeals court in Philadelphia rejected an attempt by a Republican candidate for Congress to block about 9,300 ballot papers that arrived after Election Day.
The three-judge panel, led by US Circuit Judge Brooks Smith, noted the "unprecedented challenges" facing the nation this year, particularly the "significant disruption" caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Smith said the committee sought to support "an indisputable suggestion in our democratic process: that the legal vote of every citizen should matter."
The ruling includes the decision of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to accept ballots that arrived on Friday, November 6, three days after the polls closed. That court had agreed with Democratic state officials that they wanted to extend the deadline amid concerns about delays in the postal service and the epidemic.
