The United States imposed financial sanctions and travel bans on 14 Chinese officials on Monday for their alleged role in ousting Hong Kong's elected opposition lawmakers last month.

The move is widely seen as part of outgoing President Donald Trump's effort to cement his difficult legacy with China as well as President-elect Joe Biden, before taking office on Jan.20, in hard-line positions in Beijing at the same time. Bipartisan anti-Chinese sentiment in Congress.

The Trump administration previously imposed sanctions on Hong Kong CEO Carrie Lam, current and former chiefs of police for the Asian Financial Center, and other senior officials in August over what it said was their role in restricting freedoms in an offensive against the pro-democracy movement in the region.
