Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly has called for Russia to be investigated by the International Criminal Court for committing crimes against humanity as a result of its invasion of Ukraine.

Following the exit of her and other Western diplomats from Sergey Lavrov's address to the U.N. Human Rights Council, Canadian Foreign Minister Joly announced Canada's intentions in Geneva.

Karim A.A. Khan, the ICC prosecutor, announced Monday he would initiate an investigation because he found evidence to support war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine.

Canada and their allies sanctioned Sergei Lavrov and Russian President Vladimir Putin for orchestrating an illegal attack on a sovereign country.
