Before the Beijing Olympics, the US Commission requests a UN report on the Uyghurs

In a letter to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, chair and co-chair of the CECC, Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) said, "Doing so would provide a global public service as the international community's attention turns to China while it hosts this worldwide spectacle."

"It would also underscore the reality that no country is beyond international law or beyond investigation," the MPs continued.

The Chinese administration is conducting genocide against Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities in Xinjiang, according to many Western nations, notably the United States, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. More than a million people are presently held in internment camps, where they have been subjected to abuses like forced sterilization, abortion, rape, torture, forced labor, and the separation of children from their families.
