As the COVID-19 outbreak spreads across Australia, hospitals in Victoria are feeling the strain.

Due to increased COVID-19 admissions and testing demand, three Victorian hospitals are advising patients not to attend emergency departments unless "absolutely necessary."


In the following days, health officials predict a spike across coronavirus hospitalizations in the state.


The number of persons infected with the virus who have been admitted to hospitals has increased by 123 in the last week, from 368 on December 27 to 491 on Monday.


Sunshine, Footscray, and Williamstown hospitals in Melbourne's west are all "now under extreme pressure," according to Western Health.


Suellen Bruce, executive director of Western Health, said the alert was issued as a result of the extraordinarily high provision of opportunities combined with COVID-related staffing concerns.
